It’s my first post of 2020! This year I’ll work on updating the content more frequently and focus on technology in modern fishing. Speaking of technology, I’ve been in the market for a Motorguide Xi5 for a while now. First I built out a NMEA 2000 network on my boat and upgraded my fishing electronics along with purchasing a Lowrance GPS Point 1 puck. The final step was buying the Motorguide Xi5 trolling motor with Pinpoint GPS. This would allow me to setup routes around my waypoints and most importantly I’d have the anchor feature.
The only problem was the $1,500 price tag. Also I would need the MotorGuide® PinPoint GPS Gateway Kit that was an additional $150. Well instead of purchasing the trolling motor and NMEA connection new, I got it for a great price, USED.
I came across this awesome deal while searching Craigslist for Lowrance equipment. It was the 12v motor, 55lb thrust which is what I’m looking for. At a pretty good price, $675.
Negotiating Price
I texted the seller and asked if he would be interested in trades. He texted back with “No trades but make me an offer.” I immediately thought $450 but thought it was too low and didn’t want to lose the sale. So I started with $500… and he accepted! Since he is close to my area I asked if he could meet that evening and he said yes. Next thing you know I’m swinging by the ATM and headed to the meet spot.
Why are you selling the trolling motor?
When I met him in person I was impressed with the condition of the trolling motor. He stated in the ad that it was used so I expected it to be more worn that it was. Also he had original packaging for each item.
I asked him why he was selling and he said that he upgraded. Makes sense because this is the lowest thrust/voltage Motorguide Xi5. I was still a little skeptical on why he was willing to sell this expensive equipment for 1/3 the price.
We tested the motor by hooking the trolling motor up to my battery. Using the fob, he was able to increase speed and change direction easily. The LED display on the unit lit up, including the satellite connection. Everything worked as it should. I’ll take it!
Now I have the Xi5 trolling motor and I need to install it on my boat. Stay tuned! I’ll post a new blog once it’s been installed.
